A long-tail boat idles in the dark, oily water of a Bangkok canal, its driver wearing a faded yellow safety vest and a wide-brimmed hat against the setting sun. The golden hour light catches the wet, rusted metal of the engine housing and the peeling green paint on the hull. In the foreground, a plastic basket holds fresh morning glory and chilies, their vibrant greens and reds against the murky water. A child in the back holds a small, crumpled plastic bag, watching the wake ripple past concrete embankments lined with tangled electrical wires. The quiet transition from day to night, with the boat’s wake distorting the reflection of a nearby temple spire.
