Blue Hour Loading Dock Vancouver Street in in a trailer yard outside the warehouse near Strathcona, Vancouver

Blue Hour Loading Dock Vancouver Street

by Amy Strickland

Wet asphalt reflects the harsh glow of a single bare bulb mounted above a concrete loading dock in a Strathcona trailer yard. The light cuts through the cooling blue hour, illuminating stacked pallets wrapped in translucent plastic film that catch hard white glare. Metal dock plates lie flat against the damp ground, their rivets and edges sharp against the dark pavement. Converging lines of the warehouse wall and parked trailers guide toward a distant vanishing point where the sky deepens to indigo. The dry season air leaves surfaces clear of mud, showing only the slick sheen of recent rain on the industrial floor. A shadow from the bulb stretches long across the wet concrete.
