Beach Towels in Austin

Sunlight slants across the travertine rim of the Zilker Park fountain, illuminating a spray of mist that catches the late afternoon gold. In the mid-ground, a cyclist in a neon jersey pauses near the water’s edge, their bike leaning against a low limestone wall. Scattered on the dry pavement nearby are two crumpled beach towels, one faded blue and one striped, left behind by visitors cooling off after a swim in the Barton Springs pool. The rough texture of the park’s native rock formations and the distant, hazy silhouette of the Austin skyline, with the warm light casting long, sharp shadows from the fountain’s central spire onto the surrounding stone benches.
