Under the heavy violet spill of a streetlamp, a corner of a Rio de Janeiro sidewalk bar reveals a lived-in counter where a stack of yellowed newspapers rests beside a wicker hamper overflowing with plastic cups. The warm orange glow from a nearby neon sign catches the rough texture of the hamper’s weave, against the smooth, wet concrete of the pavement. A customer’s hand reaches in, fingers brushing against the cool metal of a drawer pull on a small cabinet, while a vintage Italian majolica plate sits abandoned near a boot scraper, its blue and white patterns vivid against the dark, cluttered wood.
