Early morning light spills over the tiled roof of a narrow Shitamachi machiya, illuminating a small concrete balcony where an elderly resident tends to a row of chrysanthemums in terracotta pots. A pair of rusted garden shears rests on a wet wooden crate, blades slightly open, catching the soft, diffuse glow of the rising sun. Steam curls gently from a chipped ceramic cup placed near the railing, mingling with the cool mist that rests on the narrow alleyway below.
