Balancing Bananas in Nairobi

Cool early morning light spills through the high, dusty windows of a Nairobi matatu stage, illuminating a chaotic cluster of daily life. A conductor in a faded blue uniform balances a heavy plastic crate of green bananas on his shoulder, his posture tense with the effort of navigating the crowded concrete floor. Behind him, the peeling yellow paint of a corrugated iron wall reveals patches of grey stucco, scarred by years of impact. A rusted metal stair rail curves into the frame, its surface cold and slick with condensation.
