Flat, heavy gray clouds fill the sky above a crowded textile stall in Baghdad, diffusing the midday sun into a soft, even glow. A merchant stands behind a low wooden counter draped in patterned fabrics, grinding dried cinnamon bark on a rough stone mill. The rhythmic motion sends fine brown dust into the air, settling on the colorful bolts of silk and linen stacked nearby. Wooden trays hold piles of turmeric and cardamom pods, their bright yellows and greens against the muted tones of the overcast day. Heavy moisture hangs in the humid air, visible as a slight sheen on the polished stone floor.
