Arranging Ceramics in Palermo
by Wilma Hodge
Winter noon light floods a cramped fruit stall in Palermo’s Ballarò market, casting sharp, geometric shadows across pyramids of bright orange blood oranges and pale lemons. A vendor in a faded blue apron balances a stack of chipped ceramic serving bowls on his hip while reaching for a heavy iron door handle to close the wooden crate beside him. The scene is alive with texture: the rough weave of burlap sacks, the slick skin of citrus, and the tarnished brass of a drawer pull on a nearby scale. Above, frayed red and yellow bunting flutters against the stark blue sky, adding a splash of festive color to the gritty, lived-in workspace.
