Adjusting Thermometer in Montreal

by Robin Quintero

A damp, grey mist rests on the stone facade of a corner bakery in Old Montreal as a vendor wipes condensation from a glass display case. Inside, rows of golden croissants sit beside a few dark, glossy eggplants intended for the evening’s special, their waxy skins reflecting the weak dawn light. The vendor’s hands, clad in thin blue latex gloves, adjust a small analog thermometer clipped to the shelf, its needle trembling slightly in the chill. Outside, the wet pavement mirrors the warm yellow glow of the interior bulbs, against the cool blue-grey fog that softens the outlines of passing pedestrians.
